Melanie Steckel, Health Promotion Services Program Director, celebrated her 25th anniversary in Y work in 2002. As a Y Program Director over the years, she has been a swim instructor, life guard, day camp leader, fitness instructor, CPR instructor and all around fitness expert. Because of her dedication to member service, many people think of Mel as "Mrs. Y". Melanie received her YMCA Fitness Specialist Certification several years ago that involved a week-long intensive course of study. In her spare time she is a runner and qualified to run the Boston Marathon in 1999.

Andy Brabson, Exercise Area Program Director, has been employed by the Y since 2006. He took over the Director position in November 2007. He has been a certified personal trainer through ISSA since 2002. The Muscatine Community Y is committed to providing fitness opportunities to any person who comes to the facility. Young or old, fitness fanatics or recovering couch potatoes, everyone is welcome at the Y!

Our exercise and weight room feature STRIVE selectorized weight equipment for self-motivated exercisers. For those who prefer some direction, we offer a wide variety of exercise classes. And our experienced personal trainers can create a fitness program that is tailored to your lifestyle and special needs.

In addition to serving individual members, the Y is a resource to local businesses, providing fitness testing for company wellness programs.

Following you'll find descriptions of our fitness programs and we've also included some facility information. After looking this over, we encourage you to come and take a tour of the facility! READY TO BE FIT CLASS

This class is designed for new or returning exercisers who would like the guidance of an instructor to lead them through their workouts in the Y's exercise area. Participants will learn to use Y cardio equipment, STRIVE weight equipment, and some free weights. Endurance and strength will be increased gradually for an indiviual program with the expertise of an instructor and group support to make exercise fun and do-able! Class meets twice per week.

LOW IMPACT AEROBICS

KICKBOXING

This group fitness class combines punching and kicking in safe and effective combinations set to music. Routines work upper and lower body. Class includes a great cardio workout and stretching at the end.

HEAD-TO-TOE TONING

INTERVAL CONDITIONING
This class format consists of cardio and conditioning stations set up around the room. Participants will move from station to station utilizing various equipment to perform the exercises. Intervals may include: Step, bike, jump ropes, weights, stability ball, and exercise tubing. Geared for experienced exercisers, but can be modified.

SERGEANT STANGE'S BOOT CAMPS

This advanced boot camp fitness class in the "spirit of" military or sports training, will be an extreme challenge in a circuit format which may include: running & sprints, pliometrics, jumping, calisthenics, and strength training. All outdoors! Space is limited - must pre-register. The class is not for beginning exercisers. Participants receive a t-shirt their first session.

This class combines classic core-strengthening Pilates movements on the mat and variations done while standing. Standing Pilates uses your own body weight to help achieve faster, longer-lasting results. Hand weights are also incorporated for full-body strengthening and toning.

AIKIDO

Aikido is unique among the martial arts because it never resists or clashes with conflict. Instead, Aikido uses natural, circular movements and breath energy (ki) to control the opponenet's vulnerable points. Besides being a self-defense art, Aikido is a healthful exercise for both the mind and body. Participants must be at least 14 years old.

SHORIN RYU ADULT KARATE

Shorin Ryu karate is a combination of Chinese Kung Fu and Okinawan punching art (Te). Traditional techniques and conditioning exercises form an integral part of training. This controlled style of karate helps the student develop physical and mental discipline. Participants must be at least 16 years old.

HATHA YOGA

Hatha Yoga incorporates physical conditioning through a series of postures and breath control. Classes start with breathing, relaxation, and warm-up stretches, followed by a series of postures or simple body movements. Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing, no shoes, and bring a towel or small blanket. Class ends with a peaceful quiet time.

PERSONAL FITNESS ASSESSMENT
Need a starting point or to see how effective your exercise program is? Have your fitness assessed and compare results with national norms. The assessment includes: resting heart rate, blood pressure, body composition, test for cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, muscle strength, and endurance.
