Susan Cory, Executive Director of the Muscatine Community Y, has been doing "Y" work for 30 years now, beginning her career with the Cedar Rapids YWCA.  With a BA degree from the University of Maine at Orono, she became interested in human services and their delivery. At the Cedar Rapids YWCA, she was part of a team that implemented the first battered women's shelter in Iowa.   She moved to Muscatine to become the YWCA Executive Director and was responsible for establishing a Fitness Center and the Mom's program in the first years of service.  Susan was appointed Executive Director of the Muscatine Community Y in 1997 when the YWCA and Family YMCA merged. "The Y offers each member the opportunity to serve along with opportunities to enhance each member's day-to-day life.  I enjoy and am challenged daily by this unique mix.  And, throughout my career, I have found that the finest people are drawn to Y work, be they volunteers or paid staff.  It has been a privilege to know them and work to promote the values of the Y."

If you have questions, concerns, comments or suggestions please email me.  I'd like to hear from you soon and often!

dragonThe Y offers a variety of fitness options with the goal of meeting the needs of all our members.  One of our options is Indoor Cycling, which is located in the room formerly called the “golf room”, across from our elliptical room.

Indoor cycling classes were introduced to the Muscatine Community Y last summer, and many members and guests have participated in this fun, high-energy workout.  One of those participants is Jean (pronounced John) Dragon.  Jean took his first indoor cycling class at the Y last December.

“The indoor cycling classes appealed to me because of the group dynamics.  The instructors are well-qualified and very supportive.  One of my co-workers recommended I try the class, and while I had never participated in this type of fitness activity before, I now teach two classes a week and also attend two classes a week led by other instructors.  At this point, I’ve lost 50 pounds!  It’s a great workout!  I haven’t experienced any other fitness option where I could see such measurable results,” Dragon states.

Indoor cycling is a low-impact form of exercise that is ideal for any fitness level.  Classes are offered at a variety of times during the week, and Jean describes the instructors by breaking them down into two main groups.  “Some of the instructors have a cycling focus and work more on drills to improve performance as cyclists.  Other instructors have a spinning focus and tend to work on toning exercises.  But keep in mind that you go at your own pace.  The instructors definitely motivate participants, but no one is competing.”

As far as tips, Jean says a real “must” is to bring a water bottle to class with you.   Another recommendation he offers is to purchase a pair of cycling shorts.  “If you attend class one time week, it may be hard to make a lot of improvement, but if you attend class more frequently, you’ll see real results.  The shorts are designed for cycling and offer some additional padding for comfort.  This really helps when you’re cycling fairly frequently.”

Indoor Cycling classes are free for members.  There is no
pre-registration required, it’s a first-come, first-serve basis.  There are 11 bikes available for classes, so there is a limit on the number of participants.  If you would like more information on class times, contact the Business Desk at the Y at 263-9996.
