The vision of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Muscatine County is successful mentoring relationships for all children who need and want them, contributing to better schools, brighter futures, and stronger communities for all in Muscatine, Louisa and Cedar Counties. Being a Big Brother, Big Sister or a Big Couple is about being a friend, and bringing a little magic into your life, and that of a child. Bigs and Littles find that little moments truly are big magic.

The vision of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Muscatine County, a program of the Muscatine Community Y, is successful mentoring relationships for all children who need and want them, contributing to better schools, brighter futures, and stronger communities for all in Muscatine, Louisa and Cedar counties.  Being a Big Brother, Big Sister, or a Big Couple is about being a friend, and brining a little magic into your life, and that of a child.

Our impact on children
Bigs and Littles have fun together — and create memories that last a lifetime. We call it “Little moments … Big magic.” Research on our volunteer programs points to the powerful, positive, lasting impact Bigs have on children’s lives. Littles are:

        • 52% less likely to skip school
        • 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
        • More likely to get along with their families and peers

About Us

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Muscatine County is affiliated with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America: the oldest, largest and most effective youth mentoring organization in the United States. Nationally we have been the leader in one-to-one youth service for more than a century, developing positive relationships that have a direct and lasting impact on the lives of young people.

One of the biggest misconceptions about being a Big Brother, Big Sister or a Big Couple is that it means being a perfect role model.  What it really means is being a friend, and bringing a little magic into your life and that of a child.  Think back to when you were a kid.  Who was it that brought magic into your life just by being there?  Who do you always remember with a smile?  Maybe it was an aunt who taught you to cook, or a neighbor who let you help him fix his car.  Or maybe it was someone who just included you in everyday activities of life because it was fun – for both of you.  Being a Big is one of the best decisions you will ever make.  It means a chance to gain a new friend, and see the world – and be seen - through fresh new eyes.  No matter where you are in life right now, being a Big will make it better.

Our Mentoring Programs Work
National research has shown that positive relationships between youth and their Big Brothers and Big Sisters mentors have a direct and measurable impact on children's lives. By participating in our youth mentoring programs, Little Brothers and Sisters are:

  • More confident in their schoolwork performance
  • Able to get along better with their families
  • 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
  • 27% less likely to begin using alcohol
  • 52% less likely to skip school.1

Our Programs

One Hour a Week Can Make a BIG Difference.Big Brothers Big Sisters matches children ages 5 through 16 with mentors in professionally supported one-to-one relationships. We have volunteer programs in Muscatine and Louisa counties.

Making the Connection
Big Brothers Big Sisters has a variety of volunteer opportunities available.
Matches come together through our two essential programs:

  • Community-based Mentoring is the traditional Big Brothers Big Sisters relationship. It’s all about one-on-one time spent with the volunteer and the young person doing things they enjoy — one hour a week filled with shared interests and activities like:
      • Shooting hoops
      • Playing a board game
      • Sharing a pizza
      • Taking a walk in the park
      • Or just hanging out and talking.

The schedule can be flexible to meet the needs of mentors and young people in different kinds of situations. Some Bigs meet their Littles on the weekend or in the evening. Others get together with their Littles after school. There’s almost no one so busy that they can’t find a way to fit in a few hours a month.

  • School-Based Mentoring is not a classroom program, and it's not tutoring. School-Based Mentoring is one-to-one mentoring that takes place in the schools. Of course, some students do talk with their mentors about class, or do homework, or read together, but it's really all about friendship and guidance. You can play or jump rope or shoot hoops — whatever you and the student enjoy. You don't need any special training or certification. If you can spend a few hours a month, arranged around your needs and the school's schedule, you may be able to start participating in a School-Based Mentoring program this fall!

Volunteering

How a Big becomes a Big (and a Little a Little)

A lot of things have to happen before we make a match. After they express an interest in our volunteer opportunities, all our Bigs go through a thorough background check and careful interview process. Then we match Bigs and Littles based on location, personalities and preferences. And we provide full support for our volunteer programs along the way — so that matches can grow into lasting friendships.

Volunteering is fun!  Being a Big Brother or Sister is simple and rewarding.  It is as easy as showing your new Little Brother or Sister how to play a favorite computer game, bake an apple pie or reading the funnies together.  We’ve learned that being someone special to a child doesn’t take much more than that. But the impact is huge—for both of you!

Male Mentors Wanted!  Though Big Brothers Big Sisters is always looking for volunteers from all walks of life, right now there is a greater need for men.  Being a Big Brother is one of the most rewarding things you will ever do. As a Big Brother, you get to be a kid again for an hour a week while you give a kid the invaluable gift of your friendship. Of the boys waiting for a Big Brother right now, there’s one wanting to play video games, shoot hoops, or just hang out with someone just like you!

You've been thinking about getting involved. You know the importance of volunteering, how easy it is and how much your help is needed. Why not apply to be a Big today?

Becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister is designed to build a match based on shared interests, personality and your volunteer preferences.

Quick Steps to Become a Big
Here are the quick and easy steps we'll walk you through:

1. Apply. Ready to take the next step right now? In the forms section of this web site you will find the Big Brothers Big Sisters Volunteer Application.  E-mail the completed application to dmckasson@muscatiney.org.  Big Brothers Big Sisters staff will contact you to set up an appointment and to answer any questions you have.  Alternatively, give us a call at 263-9996 and we can send you the application.

2. Interview. A match coordinator will interview you in person, at the location and time most convenient for you.

3. Background Check. Child safety is our priority, so we'll review your records to ensure you'll be a good fit for our program. We do ask volunteers to pay a one time $10 fee for the record checks.

4. Training. Training may be offered individually or in a group.

5. Matching. We will review the kids in your area who need a Big Brother or Big Sister and find the best fit for you. Making the right match is important to our commitment to form lasting relationships.

6. Ongoing Support. You won’t be in it alone. A professional from Big Brothers Big Sisters will give you support as you need it.

Spending Time with Your Little
Once matched, Big Brothers and Big Sisters develop friendships with their Little Brothers and Little Sisters.  Whether playing a computer game or simply hanging out - you bring magic into the life of a child.  It's that simple.

School-based matches meet in schools for just one hour each week during the day.  They do projects together, read in the library, eat lunch, shoot hoops and more.

Community-based matches are flexible and will fit your busy schedule.  Bigs and Littles hang out in the community and go to museums, sports events, movies, and more.  It's up to you and your Little!

We'll Support You
Each match is supported by professional Big Brothers Big Sisters staff.  Match support specialists regularly check in with volunteers, children, and parents, and are always available to answer questions.

Enroll a child

Give your child the gift of a mentor — and a new friend.  When people think of mentoring programs, they think of Big Brothers Big Sisters. As an established youth organization, for more than 100 years we’ve worked to develop youth mentoring programs that work.  Our experienced approach to recruiting, screening, matching and supporting our mentoring relationships has resulted in lasting relationships, and helped change the lives of young people in our community.

Parents are our Partners.
We’ll work closely with you because your input is important. Not only do you provide information about your child’s strengths and needs, but you approve the selection of the Big Brother or Big Sister.  Once the match is made, parents remain closely involved in several key ways, including:

  • Approving match activities and supporting your child’s involvement
  • Asking your child questions about the match meetings, and reporting any concerns to Big Brothers Big Sisters staff
  • Regularly reporting back to Big Brothers Big Sisters staff about your child’s progress and milestones in the match relationship – Big Brothers Big Sisters will contact you regularly, but we welcome your feedback at any time
  • Participating in training on child safety offered by Big Brothers Big Sisters staff, and communicating with your child about the training he or she receives.

Your child's safety is very important to us.
Big Brothers Big Sisters conducts a thorough background check on every volunteer in our mentoring programs and every match is regularly reviewed by a professional trained match coordinator.
The safety and well-being of the children we serve is Big Brothers Big Sisters' highest priority. We strive to achieve the highest quality possible in matching a child to a caring volunteer Big, and in providing ongoing professional support services to our children, parents and volunteers.
To help ensure child safety,   Big Brothers Big Sisters National Standards of Excellence require the following steps to be taken.  Each volunteer must complete a thorough screening process that includes:

  • Completion of a formal written application
  • A criminal history record check
  • References Checks
  • An in-person interview
  • An assessment of their home environment (for community-based mentoring)
  • A professional assessment of their appropriateness to volunteer with a child
  • An orientation and training process that outlines the individualized needs of your child and provides information and resources on how to encourage your child's healthy development

Big Brothers Big Sisters also provides child safety tips to you and your child, and we welcome your questions and feedback. Throughout the life of the match, our professional staff will be in ongoing communication with you, your child, and your child's Big. Our staff and your child’s Big, with your support, are committed to the healthy growth and development of your child.

Support from individuals like you is vital to provide mentors for children in your community.  And we know they need them. It isn’t easy being a kid these days. • Offer one-on-one, ongoing supervision and support for every match
  • Provide cultural and social activities to enrich the opportunities for children

Your donation stays local.  When you donate to Big Brothers Big Sisters 100% of your donation directly supports children in our community.
